Thangka Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Karmapa’s visit to the West

After seven months of intense work, master thangka painter Greg Smith has completed the thangka commemorating the 50th Anniversary of His Holiness the Sixteenth Gyalwang Karmapa’s 1974 visit to the West!

The thangka was commissioned by a group of patrons and has been given to Drala Mountain Center. It currently hangs in the staff meditation shrine room, brocade and all! You can view the thangka with its description on Greg’s homepage http://www.thangka-painter-gregsmith.com

As depicted in a portion of the thangka, in September of 1974 His Holiness visited and blessed Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (now Drala Mountain Center), planted a small tree and chose and blessed the site for the future Great Stupa of Dharmakaya. How perfect that Drala Mountain Center is the most excellent and highly auspicious home for this thangka in the West!
The Karmapa also fulfilled Padmasambhava’s 8th Century prophecy when visiting the Hopi Nation and making rain after a 75 day drought. When the iron bird flies, when horses run on the wheels, the King will come to the land of the red man.

This thangka is also a deep and profound tribute to Trungpa Rinpoche, who spent many intense and tireless months painstakingly training and transforming his students into a sangha fit to welcome a true Dharma King to the West.
