question

Hi,

At Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's recent teaching on transcending madness,
someone asked him how to deal with all the speed and madness around one
when you feel overwhelmed. He said something like, "To tell you the
truth, what I do is just pray". He talked a bit about the physical
impacts of saying the Om Mane Padme Hum mantra. I wanted to ask about
this approach in light of how the Vidyadhara taught us to lean right
into the madness. Does anyone out there have any comments on this?

Thanks,

Sally Walker

Hi Sally:
The Vidyadhara once advised me to recite Vajrayogini's mantra to protect my mind when in the midst of samsaric chaos, such as walking down a city street. Mantra literally means in Sanskrit "mind protection." For example, reciting Avalokitesvara's mantra connects ones mind to the universal power of compassion. Over the years I've often found myself remembering to say Cakrasamvara's or Vajrayogini's mantra to bring myself into nowness when my mind was in turmoil. Yelling Phat! works well, too.
Best wishes,
